Dear friends, family, and alumni of the Columbia Ski and Snowboard Club,

Every year, Columbia University participates in Columbia Giving Day, an online fundraising sprint calling on all alumni, students, faculty, parents, and friends of the University to join up, in the spirit of a team, and make a contribution. As a Columbia Club Sport, the ski and snowboard club also participates in Columbia Giving Day, and benefits from your and your family’s generous support. We are excited to announce that this year’s Giving Day is Tuesday, October 1.

The Columbia Ski and Snowboard Club is a cherished community for hundreds of undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni in their time here at Columbia. In the past four years, our club has organized trips to 22 different mountains, in 6 different states across the East Coast. From Virginia to Vermont, our club gives members from all over the world a chance to explore the Northeast, get out of the city, and forge lifelong friendships.

Our competition teams have dominated the Atlantic Highlands Conference in the past 4 years, sending a team to regionals and nationals four years in a row. In 2024 alone, the women’s snowboard racing team won the league and the individual all around, the women’s ski racing team took second in the league and first in the individual all around, the freestyle team came second in the region, and the men’s ski racing team came 5th in the league, scoring in the top ten almost every race.

However, all that we’ve accomplished is not without a cost. Decreasing allocations from Columbia Club Sports, COVID-related policies at Columbia and local mountains, inflation, and higher ticket costs have greatly impacted our members. Based on a recent survey our Board conducted, nearly 75% of club members say they struggle to or cannot afford dues, 20% of whom say rising costs specifically in the last year have made the club unaffordable. Over 40% of our competition team says they rely partially or completely on Columbia Ski and Snowboard to provide the equipment they need to race, but only 6% of our team says Columbia Ski and Snowboard has all the resources they need.

So, we are asking for your help. Ski and Snowboard members, families, and alumni, we are asking for your support.

Every dollar donated by club members, alumni, and families goes directly back into the club, allowing our community to continue to thrive. With your support, we bring together people from all ends of the Columbia community to share our common interest: spending time in the mountains. With your support, we put skiers on lifts, snowboarders on the slopes, racers in the start gate, and freestylers in the air. With your support, our club continues to thrive.

We encourage you to consider donating to Columbia Ski and Snowboard this giving day. Let’s make this year the best one yet!

Sincerely,
Ski and Snowboard Executive Board.
